Talk Page Hey look! We have a new search box feature on the left side. Also, you can now add comments to individual pages — please use this feature to suggest further edits and leave messages to other contributors that are specific to a particular page. The Talk Page is still available for global comments and discussions about the overall Wiki. We really need to gear up if we want to launch the Guide in a reasonable time frame. If every registered user contributes at least one significant thing to the wiki every day, we can do it. Please aim for this goal. Here is a good introduction to writing better wiki articles. Another useful tutorial device is the "Wiki Help" button, which appears under the editing window of the Sandbox. To answer a question from the Forum, Wikipedia articles can be migrated here (and edited further) provided that you include a notice that some of the material has been taken from Wikipedia under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. To see some candidates for migration, check Wikipedia's List of Asian American Topics, Asian American Issues, and Asian American Culture pages. There is a small group of Wikipedia users that seems to be working along some of the same lines as we are, but without the empowerment focus. Don't turn the Wiki into a train wreck. Content should not be forced where it obviously does not pertain to the page topic. Take the effort to find the right page for the topic. If no page currently exists, find an appropriate parent page, take the time to write an appropriate narrative introducing your topic, create an internal link, and follow the link ("?") to create a new page where you can put your material. Aim to clean up more messes left by others and leave fewer messes of your own for others to clean up. P.S. If you think I'm being nasty here, I'm actually displaying patience by putting in the time to explain myself here. I really don't have the time to write a substantive response every time I see something messed up on the Wiki — in most cases I'll just delete it without comment. So do put in the effort to do things right. There are no magic elves here. Leaving "raw material" behind in the hope that someone else will turn it into an article is considered anti-social behavior, and if it becomes a habit, is grounds for banning. While incomplete drafts of Wiki pages are acceptable, extraneous material that an author is using while writing is in progress belongs on the author's computer, not on the Wiki. — Andrew Giantgrowth: I propose we link the "List of Contemporay Asian American Activists & Artist" to the page "Media Protray" under "Examples of Realistic/Positive Portrayals". I will continue to work on the pages and will be adding articles daily. But also, I want us to contemplate the addition of a page in which we can speak about our experiences and situations. Andrew, The paragraph "A Different Mirror wasn't from an article. I wrote that one to give an example of the perpetual foreigner. Would that one still be okay to use? The one below was a MM.com article I tried to use as another example. But could I still use the one I wrote and an appropriate place for that one? --vera Is there is limit to how many of those links we can transfer from the media database over to the media portrayals in the guide? I was putting some in and got to: ((Bitter Tea of General Yen, The )), which I was trying to place under Archvillians and Dragon Ladies, but now the (( )) isn't causing a link.--- Vera WStallion: I see Vera wrote an entry for Kickboxer, but I cant find it in the Media Portrayals page. The List of SOWs is a good(and humorous) idea for a page, but I was wondering if it could be a list that includes the reasons why they are sellouts next to their names. Andrew (and others)I haven't been able to get the text? link to link to work. I worked on transferring some of those article links to the media portrayals and it worked out pretty good until the last one that you see that doesn't cause a link. I've been tempted to write a few details out under different categories for soc issues etc., but I don't want to "hog" them all up when Asian members may still want to add things. I hope you don't shut it down because if that's the case I will definitely go ahead and start writing more. I left two messages on the talk page but noone has answered up until my last visit on the talk page. Yesterday I tried to check the site out but it said "debug" mode. I have been thinking of how to include some things on the Wiki through making links that relate to topics in the guide. For some reason, I am afraid that it would be considered orphan pages and that it would be viewed as irrelevant. I need feedback when I post questions on the talk page because I don't want to crowd up the wiki with things that don't "fit" so I'm being really hesitant to post some info. I'm getting a better feel though. My computer could not log on last night but it's okay now. Also, I'm on spring break as of yesterday so they'll be some activty from me. There's something else you need to get the hang of: making internal links that appear differently in the text and as the titles of the linked pages. For example, if you are writing the following sentence: The model minority stereotype is pervasive in the mainstream media. If you want to create a page titled "The Model Minority Stereotype" — titles should be capitalized, after all, you might type: ( (The model minority stereotype) ) is pervasive in the mainstream media. The problem is that you now have created a page titled "The model minority stereotype" — that's how it appears in the sentence, after all. The solution is to provide both formats, separated by a | (vertical slash) symbol, like so: ( (The Model Minority Stereotype|The model minority stereotype) ) is pervasive in the mainstream media. Now you can go back and fix all of those awkwardly titled documents you've created in the past two days. I've done a few for you already, but you should do the rest. Thanks, Andrew Great going vera! I'm glad you figured out the "image" link thingy. Keep up the good work! Thanks. You and giantgrowth helped me figure some things out and motivated me with your posting Hey gg, When I added Yul Kwon's name just now to 's to the "Examples of Realistic/Positive Portrayals" and was going to creat a page to link to, I noticed that you already made a page for him! Way to go! I didn't even have to add one. That's awesome because it shows you that there's more pages existing than before, when someone goes to add a link and discovers that there is an existing page that the link can connect to it's really was cool! WStallion: I cant get an edit link in for Charlie's Angels Full Throttle. I think it was because I originally used a colon when I typed in the page title Were you able to fix it yet? I just logged on. I'll help check it out too-- Vera1 WStallion: I got it fixed. For some reason, if I type something with a colon or an apostrophe, it doesnt come out as a link, but somebody was able to make a link for "Brainsmasher:" I've edited the hate crimes page as well as started a model minority stereotype stub. Can somebody edit these to conform to the rules of this wiki? I just called it the stereotype instead of the model minority myth because I wanted to encompass the effects this stereotype has, instead of negating it as simply a myth. also, i think there should be a "perpetual foreigner" stub that discusses the issues I've mentioned on the hate crimes page. — humpeymeister ( (The Model Minority Stereotype|The model minority stereotype) ) is pervasive in the mainstream media. I copied a couple paragraphs from your page onto the Societal Issues section of the guide under the section Andrew created called "Perpetuation of the Model Minority Myth". I put a paragraph or two from your page as a breif explaination of the heading then I added a link to your model minority stereotype within the text. I used your words within your text to link to your main page. I didn't change any words or anything, I just added the intro into the guide under the relevant section and now it will link to your stuff. I'm glad you made that page because something needed to be written about that subjuect in the (Societal Issues). Plus it gives another opportunity for your topic to be seen. If anyone's interested, you can write something to add in for the details. I made some title subheadings already so that people can add some details. Check it out.The subtitles I added are : History of emascualtion (roots in early 19th century America) How the media plays a role Psychological reasons for Asian Male emasculation on behalf of white males (for example: need for oppression, limit competition, fears....) etc etc. You guys all have good points a lot of times here, why don't you add them to the wiki where they'll actually stick around longer to be read? I've edited vera's True Americans page to add in a picture of the golden spike ceremony as well as a brief intro to the history of not giving recognition. I've also started a Yellow Peril stub to deal with more of the overt racial stereotypes against Asians. I think some of the racialized WW2 war propaganda posters or anti-Chinese editorial cartons (ahem, vera's cartoons) can go on that page. I've also made another stub about the movie The Departed as linked from the yellow peril page. I've also tweaked with The Perpetual Foreigner Stereotype wiki to add more info. I think there's room for the Edward Said "orientalism" discussion to be put in somewhere. --humpster I think I'm done editing for the day. However, I'm pretty confused on the whole wiki thing. I never really liked wikipedia for the simple fact that it's an editorial nightmare. Some of the stuff that I put in the different sections I wrote could also fall into other categories. But everytime something gets written up here there requires links. I'm already frustrated trying to come up with good articles, but then have to link and find other pages? It's a nightmare! Can there be some way to organize articles and sections better on this wiki? — humpey Wiki is what you make it. No one is going to clean up your articles for you or organize them nicely for you. If you don't organize your work and leave backlinks as you go, don't complain when you find you've created a gnarled mess. Hump, I checked out your edits. I think they were pretty good so I hope you still keep it up. Anyway, I like that photo you added to "True Americans". It was perfect after the mention of the rail road Hump, I read the emascualation page in the wiki. That was pretty good! I made those question marks into links and added a pic. The only question mark left is "interracial dating" in the text. I'll help edit for other links too. I didn't link it to the media page because I think we'll probably be making a page specifically for IR issues if it doesn't exsist already. Some of the guys should be able to have something to say in the IR section. I might help make some headings to save time, but hopefully the guys will write something too. Ok people, hold down the fort while I'm away! Going out of town for the next few days and I may or may not have access to the internet or have the chance to get on here while I'm away on my little escapade. I'll be returning this Sunday. Take care, all! Wow, Sizwe_X , you did a LOT of work! It's looks pretty cool and interesting! Does anybody know this Shinzuru fellow who has been editing the Asian Fetish page multiple times? The Asian Fetish article on regular Wikipedia is always being edited by whites, so that is a cause for suspicion.--WStallion Created by: admin last modification: Thursday 16 of August, 2007 [14:44:26 UTC] by WStallion |
