Even without the help of a large organization, there are many things that one or two people can do to empower Asian Americans. Here are a few ideas. Feel free to add more!
- Join a national organization that supports and advocates for Asian
American issues and civil rights. Then take part in any action alerts
and campaigns that are announced.
- Attend events in the Asian American community. These provide a great
opportunity to network, have fun, and support a good cause.
- Subscribe to periodicals that emphasize Asian American issues -- e.g., Amerasia
Journal, AsianWeek, Rafu Shimpo.
- Donate to Asian American nonprofit groups, especially smaller grassroots
organizations that really need the funding.
- Decline to spend your money watching movies without Asian American actors
or movies where Asian Americans are portrayed in stereotypical or negative
ways.
- Protest negative images of Asian Americans in the media and in advertising
by finding a contact for the offending company online, and sending an email,
fax or letter. Better yet, submit a letter to the editor and write
op-ed pieces.
- Make sure you are included in at least one email listserv that will keep
you up to date on the latest news in Asian America.
- Support local Asian American businesses, e.g., by buying staples from the
local Asian American grocery instead of from the large corporate supermarket
in the neighborhood.
- Volunteer for a group that helps Asian Americans, or just volunteer in
general, to increase the visibility of Asian Americans helping their
communities.
- Check in on modelminority.com frequently for the latest news and
participate in our discussions!
No, that "101 Ways" headline isn't a typo. We are counting on your help to build this list into an important resource for the Asian American community. museum.
12. During every election campaign, send out a questionnaire on Asian American issues to local political candidates. Publish the candidates' responses by email and on the Web.
13. Start a public access cable TV show. Contact your local cable company for information about public access in your area.
14. Apply to join local boards and commissions for your town, city or county. Most of these boards and commissions are desperate for citizen involvement. Find one that suits your interests and educational/professional background.
15. Engage in activities that will put you into regular contact with other people of color. Share experiences and perspectives and identify opportunities for coalition-building.
16. Share the stories of your life. Keep a diary or blog.
17. Speak out against ignorance and insensitivity regarding Asian Americans, even in cases where the speaker may not have intended to offend you. Silence sends a message that you accept the speaker's premise, which may later lead to racial discrimination against Asian Americans.
18. Understand your family's history in the context of Asian American history, immigration, and the struggle for civil rights.
19. During Asian Pacific American History Month, create a display about the Asian American experience for your office, school, or church.
20. Buy Asian American history and literature books and donate them to your local public or school library. |

Re: 101 Ways to Empower Asian Americans (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Sunday, January 12 @ 07:17:40 EST | 25. Encourage your kids to be lawyers (hopefully litigators) rather than engineers and doctors. Try to get them into ivy league schools...not for the academics but for the social networking.
26. Make a ton of money and give lots of donations to the two major political parties, become a player the party of your choice and stay the heck away from asian american PACs.
Then mentor/bring other asians into the same non-Asian political networks as equals, not tokens and not outsiders or PACs with a social mission.
27. Make sure your kids don't develop the asian american inferiority complex endemic to many asian-american organizations. Teach them to play and win even if the field isn't entirely level.
Tell them to try to level the field after they score a touchdown, rather than in the middle of a play.
Show them that scoring a touchdown goes a long way to helping even the field out all by itself. |
