Re: Learning to Stand Out Among the Standouts (Score: 1) by enygma on Saturday, March 26 @ 00:19:08 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | Well, you don't HAVE to prove yourself to the white elite if you don't want to. But if you're going to enter into a career where you will be the only minority, having a degree from a prestigious university can't hurt. I also don't think all whites refuse to "acknowledge minority intellect". Sure, there are lots who are like that *coffRexReedcoff*, but if my professor didn't acknowledge my intellect, she would never have agreed to supervise my honors paper and I would not have graduated with distinction from undergrad.
I'm also sensing some antagonistic vibe here, "But since you mentioned that are in grad school, do you still feel the need to prove yourself to whites? Does this mentality extend beyond high school?"
I never once mentioned that I needed to prove myself to the white majority, because I know that I am on an equal footing with them academically and intellectually. All of the decisions I make are made with the intent of pleasing and benefiting me, and not anyone else.

In his essay, "Politics and the English Language," he cites pretentious diction as an example of bad English. |
