Re: Learning to Stand Out Among the Standouts (Score: 1) by Nysa on Friday, March 25 @ 18:02:04 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | Why do we have to prove ourselves to the white upper class? Among whites, there will always be this long-standing refusal to acknowledge minority intellect.
I frankly do not care about what whites think. My life is definitely not centered around pleasing or proving myself to them. I know a white woman who chronically uses pretentious vocabulary but can not spell to save her life. English is not my first language, but I am a fairly good speller - better than many whites I know. My point is that many whites suffer from high egos, and as a result think they are intellectually superior.
I guess as minorities we can not help but compare ourselves to the dominant group. But since you mentioned that are in grad school, do you still feel the need to prove yourself to whites? Does this mentality extend beyond high school?
