(User Info | Send a Message) | | Whites do not have a monopoly on stereotyping. You make it sound like it is an innate quality. People are not born with it, rather they are taught it. In Japan, there are dolls called Sanbo which show ridiculous caricatures of blacks. There are a group of Japanese teenagers called blackfacers who darken their face much like vaudville days and call themselves Jiggers and act in ways they think American blacks act. ALso whites are stereotyped as "long-nosed barbarians". White caricatures in Japan always have an exaggerated long nose and red face. I recently saw a Hindi movie starring the Indian actress Sridevi and in song sequence she dresses up as a Japanese geisha with slanted eyes and all and precedes to sing the lyrics "Chini ni ni Ching Chong Chinni ni ni Chai". Stereotypes while wrong, I think they are part of human nature. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | Not to be a pain in the neck, but isn't generalizing all white people into one big, fat, racist group stereotyping as well? Maybe the problem isn't just whites, maybe it's human nature to lump together things that we don't understand or have first-hand knowledge of... I am not in any way trying to trivialize the stuggles of an Asian American, an African American, or anyone else who is ignored or misseen in this country, I just think the answer isn't quite as simple as blaming the stupid white people. SOME stupid white people can do a whole lot of damage, true. But there are some of us out here who are interested in self-improvement and education, who stand up and complain at instances of racism, and who don't appreciate being lumped into the pack. |
