For Asian Women, 'Fetish' is Less Than Benign

A week ago, InSight, the only Asian-American women's organization on campus, gathered for a weekly dinner meeting, and the topic of conversation turned to the prevalence of the "Asian fetish" in American culture. We discussed the social significance of this obsessive sexual fixation on Asian women in a larger context, including the stereotyped portrayal of Asian women in the media and its relation to the growing mail-order bride industry.

What we didn't realize at the time of the discussion was the disgusting form that this fetish had taken on a nearby college campus. Recently, Princeton graduate student Michael Lohman admitted to police that he had been silently terrorizing more than 50 Asian women on campus by clipping snippets of their hair, spraying them with his urine and pouring his semen or urine in their drinks at university dining halls when they weren't looking. After three years of these repulsive acts, investigators finally caught up with and arrested Lohman last week. They searched his campus apartment and found stolen underwear and women's hair stuffed into mittens that he had been using for sexual self-gratification.

Many might discredit this news as an isolated incident of perversity, but the fact is that there is a pattern in which Asian women are targeted for sexual fetishes, harassment and assaults, even on college campuses. For example, in 2000, two Japanese college women were abducted, raped, videotaped and told that if they told anybody what had happened, the videotapes would be sent to their fathers. The three white assailants admitted targeting Asian women precisely because they had a sexual fetish for "submissive" Asian women, but also because they believed that this same submissiveness and cultural shame would prevent the women from reporting the assaults. In 2002, N.C. State University student Lili Wang was stalked and murdered by Richard Borrelli Anderson, a white classmate who was infatuated with her and had admitted to a colleague that he had an Asian fetish.

Though it may be difficult to identify the exact origins of violence targeted at Asian women, there is no denying that media portrayal of this minority population has had an effect on building preconceived notions and shaping stereotypes of Asian women as passive, exotic and more easily dominated. Images of the Japanese Geisha girl, the South Asian seductress and the China doll pervade American culture and add to the misconception of Asian women. This has had disturbing results. For instance, in 2002, Jennifer Lynn Gossett and Sarah Byrne conducted a content-analysis study of 31 pornographic Web sites that advertised scenes depicting the rape or torture of women, and found that nearly half of the sites used depictions of Asian women as the rape victim.

Not only are Asian women disproportionately targeted in sex crimes, but they are also the least likely to report such incidents. Sex crimes are already grossly underreported, with only an estimated 26 percent of rape victims coming forward, but the percentage of Asian women who do so is even lower, at a mere 8 percent. Police hope that the Asian women will come forward about their harassment in the Princeton incident; however, the statistics tell us that it is not likely.

It is important not to lose sight of the 50-plus victims at Princeton. All of us have stories that we hear about, know about or have lived through. It is important for us to go beyond simply being outraged at such incidents and make sure we do something concrete, particularly in a way that establishes a support structure for victims. We need to be victim-centered in our approach, focusing on building community support for victims. Part of the reason why Asian women are not likely to come forward about their victimization in sex crimes is that many Asian cultures put the blame for such crimes on the women. They feel a sense of shame for having been the target of such attacks and feel that they might have done something wrong to invite the attack. It is these ideas and this culture that we must fight and abolish. The stigmatization of rape victims must end.

It may be easy to disregard the widespread existence of an Asian fetish as an "annoying" but essentially benign phenomenon that does not need to be taken seriously. But, as the Princeton episode demonstrates, we need to be aware of the violent and perverse forms it can take and its serious ramifications.

while i am in theory against rape (for both women and men) i just can't help but think we've got another yellow cab service in the making right here. classic signs of blame the ethnicity/culture for her woes instead of the larger social context of society and media; and obviously going to a YT only school where AF are overwhelmingly prefered in admissions over AM in order to become YT fetishized objects doesn't convince me this is a serious effort at resolving racism against AF.

why doesn't this AF talk about the racist media's impact that needs to be abolished instead of asian cultures that need be? and why not call out the sellouts that willingly take those dragon lady roles instead of flocking to YT all over the princeton campus? i'd bet any money that the IR scene in Princeton is stacked against AM for the AF. i'm not a coldhearted person, but AF are their own undoing and worst enemies.

What a disgusting pervert. Some things can not be forgiven.

Incidents like this show that the fetishization of AA women and the demasculinization of AA men are two sides of the same coin, and both are hurtful racism. AA men and women must join and fight this together.

lol yale-princeton competitveness? j/k

One thing that we can do as a community is to educate ourselves about asian fetishism, and to help our young women grow up with their eyes open to things we as AMs see. They arent our women, any more than we can lay claim to any individual, but it is our own dishonor that we have not taught our sisters more about the sick fetishes some people have. None of us here have a problem with interracial relationships, but we have a problem with sick fetish relationships, and that is something we can help destroy on our side. It might not solve the AF/WM disparity, but its definitely a piece of the puzzle whose role can be in our hands.

I don't think Asian culture blames women for being victims of sex crimes, and in that sense I didn't agree with the authors of the article. But yes, community support is important but prevention should also have the same amount of attention. It's stupid INDIVIDUALS who blame victims (not culture), a few stupid individuals have commented on here as well.

You can't tell me that of these 50 incidents it was the women's fault all along. DFH, are you saying that if women aren't taught self defense that it's their fault if they're ever assaulted? Why is it their fault that they were minding their own business when some sicko attacked them via bodily fluids?

Do not let the white man get his way with our women. We must be protectors of our people!
May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.

Hello:
Yes I am a white man who is posting this message, but to be honest with all of you. I think that this man should be in prison and be someones *****. Where he will be treated worse than the way those asian women were treated. I feel sorry and have symphaty for those who were victims of this heinous and discusting act of venomous hatred towards asian women. Not only does he have a fetish problem, but I do not think that any amount of counseling will change how he acts or feels towards asian women. Some of you might agree with me,some of you might not. Either way that is ok. If you have any questions about the post please feel free to write to me.I don't know what to title the letter, but title the letter relating to this post about this student from Princeton.Thank you and I hope to get some feedback.

Yet, there continues to be strong denial from the majority of Americans that Asian fetish exists. We keep on hearing about "Why can't we just all get along" or "You are just being too sensative" or "Aren't you just being racist yourself when you are discriminating against interracial relationships"? What pepople are failing to realize that fetish has nothing to do with love, but more with the objectification of human beings as sexual object. This is what you get when you cut the foreskin off the penis and leave the gland exposed, add that with the crazy white sexual judements, you will have the most horny and carzy males around.

Please remember, they ***** anything, this is the probably the only country that has to regulate sex with animals, relatives, dead people. It is not the problems of the AF. . . they are just sick, look at the rape numbers, child molestation numbers, and the numbers of mentally ill on psychotic drugs (50 percent of school childern here are nuts) Lets not over anylize, its probably the inbreeding, who knows. .. AF learn to do what WF do. . . KICK THEM IN THE BALLS WHEN THE WHITE MAN LOOK AT YOU THE WRONG WAY. . . problem solved.

These acts along with all the pre-conceptions of asians are inappropriate. However,
maybe these condescending attitudes is the result of our tolerance for it. Without strong opposition and support for ourselves, how can we as the asian community expect respect.
My view is that asians generally assimilate too easily to the dominant American culture, which automatically gives americans and other races the idea we are here just for the money. We only want the prestige/award for being an american without the hard trials that the Black community went through. We look at the white american culture and follow the routine lifestyle, which includes high levels of education in engineering, computer science, finance, and jobs with big corporations run by Caucasians 99% of the time, instead I say we should start educating ourselves about social issues or if someone believes it is too late for them they should educate their kids about what is truly going on. This typical/traditional value system arises from the parents and the surrounding asian families/communities, we are pushed to focus on succeeding academically, but never succeeding socially. In turn, asians revert to the dependence on trends and what is new in culture, we must do it for the family and not for the welfare of the general population.
If we don’t succeed and meet these expectations we are only ousted socially and looked down upon as failures without the chance to defend oneself. We come 10,000 miles away to come to a land that was based on social, religious, and perhaps economic freedom, but our parents and first settlers in America did not have the same agenda, instead it was generally based on freedom, but on a different level. This journey across the pacific is about financial freedom, we grow up acknowledging the social hierarchy and its association with money, happiness, and longevity act accordingly and without hesitation. Market says computers, then Asians pursue computers, doctors make 100k 3 years after residency, Asians start becoming doctors. There isn’t anything wrong with it since we contribute financially to this country, we don’t contribute as much crime as other ethnicities, but there is a price to pay for different types of freedom. We have to bear with this and tolerate it until someone takes action. Thankfully, our discrimination is only miniscule compared to the hatred of Blacks in the South and from their experience maybe we can learn how to approach this appropriately, without violence, and only with peace.

In retrospect, are we truly stepping up to American issues, do we have a voice as strong as the Latin community, and the black community. Would the asians ever come together and support each other on illegal immigration if it involved any asian community known as being impoverished, do we even care about these issues, or do we judge and assume to quickly it is the result of their own doing. Specifically, what we get is the result of what we put in.
So, while reading the articles there is slight anger, but its not surprising because we conform to the popular culture and adapt, we be quiet, we move to the quiet suburban community where all the caucasian people live, we go to the strictly all asian church who work along side caucasians, we only reach out to those that are socioeconomic well off, and neglect the key social issues affecting the United States such as poverty, health care, elderly, and issues that are striking the core of the true popular American culture and of the world.
Overall, my view of asians from both a asian perspective and as someone who knows the general perceptions of an outsider can be summed up in one phrase; asians like to be safe and secure. This brings up this final quote from Benjamin Franklin;
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

There are two things that make this country great: the right to private property and the Second Amendment.

Asian American women should exercise the right to property by buying a gun, and should exercise their Second Amendment rights by shooting those who try to assault or rape them. When a few Asian American women fight back, all Asian American women will benefit from this deterrent effect by the white people's own racism.

NRA for life.
